Dhaka, Apr 21 (V7N)- Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum has announced that 2,000 doctors will be appointed through a special BCS recruitment process by mid-September to address the country's ongoing shortage of medical professionals.
She made the announcement while speaking to reporters following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Health Services Division and the Ministry of Railways at the Secretariat on Monday morning.
The MoU outlines a plan for the joint management of 10 hospitals currently under the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Railway.
During the media briefing, Nurjahan Begum revealed that the country currently faces a shortage of about 8,000 doctors, which is significantly impacting the smooth operation of public hospitals. She expressed optimism that the upcoming special BCS recruitment would alleviate part of this burden.
“The shortage of doctors in the country is very obvious. However, we are hopeful that 2,000 doctors will be appointed by September through the special BCS,” she said.
At the same event, Railways Ministry Advisor Fawzul Kabir Khan said that the 10 railway hospitals—located in key areas including Dhaka and Chattogram—will soon be opened to the public and operated like regular government hospitals.
He noted that if the Health Ministry is unable to provide sufficient manpower for these hospitals, the Ministry of Railways will seek recruitment through the Public Service Commission (PSC).
The collaboration marks a significant step toward expanding access to healthcare services by utilizing existing infrastructure within the railway system, in alignment with the government’s broader public health goals.
