Dhaka, July 30 (V7N) – A seven-member committee is being formed to mediate the ongoing conflict between the two factions of the Tablighi Jamaat, announced A. F. M. Khalid Hossain, Religious Affairs Advisor to the interim government.
The announcement came following a meeting with representatives of both groups at the Secretariat on Wednesday. Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury also participated in the discussions.
Khalid Hossain stated that the committee will include members from both sides and expressed optimism that the initiative will pave the way for reconciliation. “The aim is to close the path of conflict. We want a peaceful resolution,” he said.
Responding to questions from journalists, the advisor clarified that there was no discussion regarding organizing a joint Ijtema. Rather, the committee's focus is on enabling both factions to hold their respective events in peace and without interference.
On Gangachara Attacks
Addressing the recent communal unrest in Gangachara, Rangpur—where homes of Hindu families were vandalized over allegations of religious insult—Khalid Hossain condemned both the offensive remarks and the retaliatory violence.
“It is not right to make fun of religion. It creates chaos in society. The individual responsible for the religious insult has been arrested. However, vandalism and attacks in response are also unjustified. Legal action will be taken against those who committed violence, if a case is filed,” he said.
This dual approach emphasizes both the protection of religious sentiments and the upholding of law and order, according to the government advisor.
