Dhaka, Aug 01 (V7N) – Political parties have reached a consensus to elect the President of Bangladesh through a majority vote by secret ballot, involving members of both the lower and upper houses of the National Parliament.
The agreement was made during Thursday's session (Day 23) of the second phase of the National Consensus Commission’s dialogue with political parties, held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
According to the proposal discussed, the President will be elected by secret ballot of all members of both legislative chambers, as stipulated by law. The qualifications for presidential candidates will remain consistent with Article 48(4) of the current Constitution.
In a significant development, an additional clause—Article 48(4)(d)—will be introduced. This new provision will bar any presidential candidate from holding positions in the state, government, or any political party or organization during the election process.
This move is seen as part of broader electoral and constitutional reforms aimed at ensuring transparency, neutrality, and political inclusivity in the country's governance structure.
