Dhaka, Aug 05 (V7N) – Law Advisor Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul stated that the July Uprising was a collective awakening shaped by each and every citizen of Bangladesh. He made the remarks while addressing a seminar titled ‘July Uprising Day 2025’ at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Monday afternoon (August 4).
Key Statements from Dr. Asif Nazrul:
-
“Every person was a leader”:
“The July Uprising was not the result of orders or party lines. It was built by each person independently. Every citizen took to the streets with their own decision. Everyone came on their own. In this uprising, the people of Bangladesh shaped the destiny of Bangladesh.” -
On former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s India policy:
“No foreign minister in the world speaks in terms of personal relationships like ‘husband and wife’. But Sheikh Hasina did. She would say, ‘I have given so much — India won’t forget.’ As if she had given her own property. She treated Bangladesh as her personal estate. She considered the people her slaves — even her ministers.” -
On longstanding grievances:
“When border killings occurred, the ministers and the Prime Minister used to say, ‘They were smugglers — why did they go there?’ When foreign countries built roads through our rivers for truck movement, our government remained silent. How could people tolerate this? I could not. That is why I have been writing against it for 15 years.”
A Call for Historical Clarity
Dr. Nazrul emphasized that the roots of the uprising lay in widespread frustration and national humiliation stemming from decades of subservience, weak diplomacy, and repression.
“The July Uprising was not just a political event — it was a social awakening,” he said.
His speech echoed sentiments of dignity, sovereignty, and the right to question authority — themes that continue to shape the national discourse in the post-uprising period.
