Dhaka, Aug 09 (V7N) – Fisheries and Animal Resources Adviser Farida Akhtar has stated that the Women’s Reform Commission was established to safeguard women’s rights, not to promote the sex work profession. She expressed disappointment over what she described as “misinterpretations” of the commission’s report.

Speaking at the July Daughters’ Honor Ceremony held at the Krishibid Institute Auditorium in the capital’s Farmgate area on Friday afternoon, Farida Akhtar said, “No one chooses the sex work profession voluntarily. The government aims to ensure protection and improve the quality of life for those forced into this profession due to life’s hardships.”

Her comments came in response to criticism from event organizers, who claimed that the commission’s report recognized sex work as a profession.

The ceremony honored women who made significant contributions to the July Movement.
