Dhaka, Apr 14 (V7N) – The vibrant ‘Baishakhi Procession’ that began from the Faculty of Fine Arts of University of Dhaka concluded successfully, marking the first day of Pahela Baishakh with cultural expression.
Held under the theme “Harmony of the New Year, Resurgence of Democracy,” the procession started around 9:00 am on Tuesday, drawing participation from people of all walks of life, including teachers and students. The entire campus turned into a festive venue filled with colors and traditional motifs.
Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury attended the procession, which was led by the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor ABM Obaidul Islam.
The procession began from Gate No. 3 (North) of the Faculty of Fine Arts, proceeded towards Shahbagh Police Station, and made a U-turn there. It then passed key landmarks including Raju Sculpture, TSC Dhaka University, and Doel Chattar, before concluding back at the Faculty of Fine Arts at around 10:05 am.
As in previous years, the procession showcased rich folk traditions with large artistic motifs made of bamboo, wood, and colored paper. Giant figures of tigers, elephants, peacocks, and symbolic representations of mothers and children created a striking visual display. The central message emphasized the defeat of evil forces and the journey toward a prosperous future.
Five main motifs—rooster, elephant, pigeon, dotara, and horse—were highlighted, each carrying symbolic meaning. The rooster represented new beginnings and light, the dotara reflected the roots of Bengali folk culture, the elephant symbolized strength and tradition, the horse evoked rural simplicity, and the pigeon conveyed peace and harmony.
Participants also carried placards addressing social, environmental, and global issues. Messages such as protecting the Sundarbans, calls for global peace, fair prices for farmers, and concerns over international conflicts were prominently displayed.
The colorful procession once again demonstrated the spirit of unity, culture, and social awareness that defines the Bengali New Year celebrations.
