Faridpur, Oct 04 (V7N)- Traditional boat races on the Kumar River brought a festive atmosphere to parts of Faridpur and Madaripur, drawing thousands of spectators eager to witness one of rural Bengal’s long-standing cultural traditions.
The annual boat race and rural fair were held on Saturday at Rajapur village in Chatul Union of Boalmari Upazila, Faridpur. The race began at around 4:30 pm, although crowds started gathering along both banks from the morning.
As the afternoon progressed, men, women, children and young people arrived from nearby areas and beyond. The sound of oars, cheers from spectators and the movement of competing boats created a lively atmosphere along the river.
Several small and large boats and trawlers were also seen on the river as spectators followed the race. Young people played music from boats while cheering for the competitors.
Shafiq's ‘Bangla Tiger’ from Dangadurgapur village in Gobindpur Union of Muksudpur secured first place. ‘Bhai Bhai Jalpori’, led by Sattar Fakir of Laxmipur village in Boalmari Sadar Union, finished second, while ‘Sonar Tori’, led by Osman Sheikh of Arpara village in Huglakandi, Kashiani Upazila, took third place.
A separate traditional boat race was also held on Saturday afternoon at Purba Gachbaria on the Kumar River in Madaripur Sadar Upazila. The competition was organized by Prabhati Sangha, with 13 boats taking part.
Large numbers of people gathered on both banks to watch the Madaripur race. The rhythm of the oars, the activity of the competitors and the enthusiasm of spectators turned the area into another center of celebration.
‘Folia Enterprise’ won the Madaripur competition, followed by ‘Amgram Express’ in second place and ‘Niranjan’ in third.
Organizers said the annual event is aimed at preserving the disappearing traditions of rural Bengal and introducing them to younger generations. A rural fair is also organized alongside the race, adding to the festive atmosphere.
