Dhaka, Oct 03 (V7N)- Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi has said there is no specific timeline for the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh, adding that the matter is being handled through a legal process.
Speaking at the Bay of Bengal Conversation on Saturday, Trivedi said India would proceed with the issue while respecting the ongoing legal process.
Responding to questions about Hasina's departure for India, the Indian envoy said neither the Indian Air Force nor the Indian Army had come to Bangladesh to take her away.
According to Trivedi, Hasina was taken to India from Bangladesh amid the circumstances prevailing in the country at the time. He said India had not been prepared for such a situation and had not anticipated an alternative scenario.
He said India, as a neighbouring country, had a responsibility to receive the then prime minister. He also suggested that it was difficult to predict what might have happened if Bangladesh's aircraft had not been allowed to land in India.
The issue of Hasina's return remains a significant point in Bangladesh-India relations. Bangladesh has previously requested her extradition, while India has said it is examining the request through its legal framework.
Asked about the possible return of a suspect accused in the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, Trivedi said the matter remains under process.
The Indian High Commissioner expressed hope that outstanding issues between the two countries could be resolved through dialogue and continued engagement.
