Dhaka, August 18-- Following the recent change in government, a total of 626 individuals, including politicians, judges, civil officers, and police personnel, sought refuge in various cantonments across Bangladesh, according to a statement released by the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) on Sunday.
The ISPR's notification highlighted that the Bangladesh Army has been working impartially and professionally to prevent extrajudicial activities and maintain the rule of law amidst the ongoing challenges to national security and law and order.
In the statement, ISPR revealed that among those who initially took shelter, seven individuals, including their family members, are still residing in cantonments. The notification also urged the public to remain calm and avoid heeding any rumors during this period of uncertainty.
The ISPR detailed the deteriorating law and order situation following the political transition on August 5, which prompted several citizens, including political figures, judges, and civil servants, to seek refuge in the safety of military installations due to fears for their lives.
Specifically, the breakdown of those who took shelter includes: 24 political figures, 5 judges, 19 civil administration officials, 28 police officers, 487 members of various levels of the police force, 51 family members (wives and children) of the aforementioned groups, and 12 individuals from public universities and other sectors.
Out of these, 615 individuals have since left the cantonments voluntarily as the situation improved. However, four people have been handed over to law enforcement agencies following legal procedures based on allegations and cases against them.
Currently, three individuals, along with four of their family members, remain in cantonment custody. The ISPR confirmed that all relevant information regarding these individuals has been provided to the concerned ministries.
The ISPR emphasized that the Bangladesh Army is committed to its role in maintaining national security and the rule of law, and will continue to act in accordance with the country's legal framework. The Army has urged the public to remain patient and cooperative during this critical time, reaffirming its dedication to serving the people and respecting the laws of Bangladesh.
