Dhaka, Aug 26 (V7N): The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) reported that the water levels of major rivers in the northeastern, eastern, and southeastern regions of Bangladesh are steadily decreasing.

Over the past 24 hours, the eastern districts of Comilla, Brahmanbaria, and Feni, bordering Indian Tripura, as well as the inland basins of Tripura province, saw no significant rainfall. Consequently, water levels in upstream rivers have continued to recede, leading to an improvement in the flood situation in the lower areas of Feni and Comilla districts, according to an FFWC bulletin released on Monday.

The rivers in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts have also dropped below the danger level, further alleviating the flood situation.

Meteorological agencies forecast that heavy rainfall in the northeastern region and adjoining uplands is unlikely over the next 48 hours. During this period, water levels of the Manu, Khoai, and Dhalai rivers in Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts are expected to continue declining.

Light to moderate rainfall may occur in the eastern part of the country and adjacent upstream regions within the next 24 hours. This could lead to a decrease in the water level of the Gomti River in Comilla district, further improving the flood situation in the nearby low-lying areas.

In Feni district, the flood situation is anticipated to improve within the next 24 hours, although some areas may see stable conditions.

The southeastern region may experience moderate rainfall in the coming 24 hours, causing occasional rises in the water levels of rivers such as Sangu, Matamuhuri, Karnaphuli, and Halda in the Chittagong district.

Additionally, water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Surma-Kushiara rivers in the northeastern part of the country are receding. The Ganga-Padma river remains stable, and the normal flow of the Teesta-Dharla-Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region is expected to continue for the next 48 hours.
