Dhaka, Oct 03 (V7N): The ready-made garment (RMG) factories in Ashulia have begun to stabilize, returning to normal operations since yesterday (October 2) after a period of unrest.

As of this morning (October 3), most factories have reopened, with workers returning to their posts voluntarily. However, between 18 and 20 factories remain closed for various internal reasons, according to sources from the industrial police.

There have been no reports of disturbances in the area since this morning, although there is a notable presence of law enforcement and joint patrol teams.

Superintendent of Industrial Police-1, Md Sarwar Alam, was unavailable for comment as he is currently hospitalized due to injuries sustained during a clash between RMG workers and law enforcement on September 30.

Industry sources indicate that around 30 factories are still closed. Out of these, 23 factories declared a holiday in compliance with Section 13(1) of the Labour Act, which states "no work, no pay." The remaining seven factories were closed after workers departed or due to other operational issues.

Among the seven, some factories have provided paid leave. Factories such as Anjuman Design Limited and Ethical Garments Limited are closed as per Section 13(1) of the Labour Act, while others like Generation Next have declared paid leave following workers' departures.

In total, 407 factories are operational in the Savar, Ashulia, and Zirani areas, while 876 factories are running in Gazipur. Additionally, 209 factories are operating in Narayanganj, 302 in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area, and 350 in Chattogram, as reported by the industrial police.
