Dhaka, Sept 03 (V7N): Defaulted loans in Bangladesh's banking sector have reached an unprecedented level, totaling Tk 211,391 crore at the end of June this year, according to recent data from Bangladesh Bank.
The central bank's report shows a significant increase of Tk 29,096 crore in default loans since March 30, when the figure stood at Tk 182,295 crore. Currently, bad loans constitute 12.56 percent of the total loans disbursed, which amounted to Tk 1,683,396 crore by the end of June.
For comparison, soured loans were at just Tk 22,000 crore in 2009, when the Awami League secured its first of four consecutive general election victories.
