Dhaka, Apr 16 (V7N) – Despite a momentary respite from scorching heat, residents of Dhaka faced fresh misery on Wednesday afternoon as heavy rainfall during the early days of Baishakh led to severe waterlogging across various roads in the capital.
The downpour, which lasted for over an hour, left roads submerged and forced pedestrians to wade through dirty, stagnant water to return home. Many described the situation as “distressing,” especially for schoolchildren, elderly citizens, and women commuters.
Alongside pedestrians, drivers of small vehicles faced mechanical issues as water seeped into their engines, causing traffic disruptions in several areas.
Residents expressed frustration over the inefficiency of the city’s drainage system, raising concerns that if such waterlogging occurs after just one rainfall, the situation could worsen during the upcoming monsoon season.
“This is just the beginning of Baishakh, and already we’re suffering. What will happen during the peak monsoon?” questioned one commuter stuck near the Karwan Bazar area.
Earlier in the day, the city had experienced intense heat, but the relief brought by the rain was short-lived due to the lack of infrastructure preparedness.
According to the Meteorological Office, rain is expected across the country until next Sunday, after which the heatwave is likely to return, compounding the woes of city dwellers.
