Dhaka, Oct 05 (V7N): Abul Kalam Azad, who previously served as the principal secretary to deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was arrested in Dhaka on Saturday.

According to DMP Additional Commissioner (DB) Rezaul Karim Mallick, a team from the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained him at Kalabagan this evening following a tip-off.

The arrest was made based on specific allegations, and Azad has been taken to the DB office for further proceedings. "We will present him before a Dhaka court on Sunday and request remand for questioning," Mallick stated.

Abul Kalam Azad has held various significant positions, including Secretary to the Power Division, Economic Relations Division (ERD) at the Ministry of Finance, and Principal Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, in addition to serving as the Principal SDG Coordinator.

He was also appointed as a Commissioner to the Global Commission on Biodiversity under the World Economic Forum and served as the Special Envoy for the Climate Vulnerable Forum Presidency of Bangladesh, designated by the Prime Minister.

In the most recent general election, he was elected as a member of parliament (MP) from the Jamalpur-5 constituency. However, he lost his parliamentary seat following the dissolution of parliament due to a mass uprising.
