Dhaka, Sept 6 (V7N): Former Environment Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury was arrested today by the Detective Branch of police from the Gulshan area of the capital. The arrest was confirmed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman, although the specific case under which he will be shown arrested has not yet been clarified.

Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5, following the student-led uprising in July, numerous high-profile officials, including advisers, ministers, parliament members, and influential Awami League leaders, have been arrested. Chowdhury is the latest, with at least 47 top-level figures apprehended so far.

Saber Hossain Chowdhury was a member of parliament representing Dhaka-9 from 2008 to 2024. In addition to his parliamentary role, he previously served as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board and held various ministerial positions, including Deputy Minister for Ports and Shipping and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives from 1999 to 2001.

In 2001, he was appointed as political secretary to Sheikh Hasina, the then opposition leader in parliament. Most recently, Chowdhury served as Special Envoy for Climate Change under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in June 2023 and held the position of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister from January to August 2024.
