Rangamati Feb 24 (V7N) - A massive fire broke out in Sajek, Rangamati, reducing more than 150 resorts, businesses, and residences to ashes. The fire reportedly originated at Awkas Resort around 1 AM on Monday (February 24) and rapidly spread to nearby establishments.

According to locals and authorities, it took nearly five hours to bring the flames under control, with help from the army, fire service, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and police. Despite the swift response, the fire caused damages worth several crores of taka.

The Rangamati District Administration stated that the fire, which began at Sajek Recreational Manual Resort, was likely caused by an electrical short circuit. Due to the lack of a fire service station in Sajek, firefighters had to be dispatched from Dighinala, Khagrachhari, delaying efforts to control the blaze.

Baghaichhari Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Shirin Akter confirmed that while no casualties have been reported, the fire wiped out over 140 establishments, including resorts, homes, and educational institutions.

Following the disaster, Army Baghaihat Zone Commander Lt. Col. Md. Khairul Amin assured support for affected residents and stranded tourists, stating:

"We have arranged meals for the victims and provided temporary accommodation for tourists."

This is the second major fire in Sajek within a week, raising concerns about fire safety measures in the popular tourist destination. Local residents have long demanded a fire service office in Baghaichhari, but their pleas remain unanswered.

While officials initially cited a short circuit as the cause, local sources suggest a more sinister possibility. Reports indicate that a regional armed group had allegedly demanded Tk 1 million in extortion from Sajek businesses in recent days. Security forces suspect arson, believing that the fire may have been set deliberately after the demands went unmet.

Additionally, a similar mysterious fire occurred recently in Naniarchar, Rangamati, allegedly ignited by an anti-Peace Accord regional group aiming to stir communal tensions.

As investigations continue, the tragedy has reignited calls for stronger fire safety measures and improved security in the Sajek tourism area.
