Dhaka, Mar 24 (V7N)– The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has significantly increased the price of jet fuel used in both domestic and international flights, raising concerns about a potential surge in airfares.
The new rates were announced in a notification issued on Tuesday and came into effect from midnight the same day.
According to the revised rates, the price of jet fuel for domestic flights has been increased from Tk 112.41 to Tk 202.29 per liter, marking a rise of Tk 89.88, or nearly 80 percent.
For international flights, the price per liter has been raised from US$0.7384 to US$1.3216, reflecting an increase of around 79 percent.
BERC stated that the price adjustment was made in line with prevailing market conditions, import costs, and trends in the global energy market. The new rates will remain effective until further notice.
Industry insiders warn that such a steep increase in jet fuel prices is likely to have a direct impact on airfares. Domestic routes may see immediate fare hikes, placing additional financial pressure on passengers.
At the same time, airlines operating international routes are expected to face higher operational costs, which could also translate into increased ticket prices in the near future.
