Dhaka, Mar 20 (V7N) -A new political party, Janatar Dal, led by former military officers, was officially launched in the capital on Thursday with the slogan Insaaf Zindabad.
Brigadier General (Retd) Shammim Kamal has been appointed as the party chairman.
The party seeks to unite former military officers, government officials, NGO workers, and leaders from various political backgrounds.
The inaugural event, held at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh auditorium in Khamarbari, Dhaka, began with a Quran recitation, followed by a tribute to those injured during the July-August uprisings.
Among the attendees were students from private universities, NGO representatives, and freedom fighters, along with prominent political figures, including Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad, general secretary of Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party); former minister Nazim Uddin Al Azad; former MP Siraj Uddin Ahmed; former politician Azam Khan; Major General (Retd) Fazl Ibn Sharekhuzzaman; Lieutenant General (Retd) Sabbir Ahmed; Major General (Retd) Ismail Faruk Chowdhury; and former student leader Mastuk Hasan.
At the inaugural ceremony, Chairman Shammim Kamal said: "Palestine inspires our political philosophy. In Palestine, leaders emerge in less than two hours. We do not want to engage in unnecessary debates on historically resolved issues.”
He emphasized the party's focus on working with honest, courageous, educated, patriotic, and dedicated individuals.
“Even if we have only ten such people, we are ready to work with them. We have seen the history of political parties in Bangladesh; they often flee before their time is up. We will make our party accounts public so everyone can see,” he added.
However, this is not the first political party in Bangladesh founded by retired military officers, as the BNP, Jatiya Party, and several other parties were also established by military personnel in the past.
