Habiganj, May 2 (V7N) – Former Member of Parliament (MP) and BNP National Executive Committee member Sheikh Sujat Mia was attacked on Thursday afternoon in Nabiganj Upazila of Habiganj, shortly after attending a May Day rally. Later that same night, a fire broke out at his residence, suspected to be an arson attack.
The initial assault occurred around 12:00 PM while Sujat Mia was returning from a Labour Day event organized by the Nabiganj Upazila unit of the BNP-affiliated Sramik Dal (Workers’ Party). The incident took place in the Timirpur area along the Nabiganj-Habiganj road, according to Nabiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Kamal Hossain.
Eyewitnesses and police sources said that Sujat Mia was getting into his car when several young men armed with locally made weapons attacked him. However, local party activists intervened and managed to repel the assailants, allowing the former MP to escape unharmed.
Police, with the help of locals, quickly apprehended one suspect, identified as Jamil Mia. He was found in possession of a machete (locally called a ramda) and a knife. OC Kamal Hossain stated that legal action will follow upon the filing of a formal complaint.
In a separate and alarming development, a fire broke out at Sujat Mia’s residence around 10:00 PM. Fire service personnel responded promptly and were able to bring the flames under control before major damage occurred. Authorities are currently investigating whether the incident was an act of sabotage or caused by some other factor.
“We are treating the fire incident seriously and conducting an investigation to determine whether it was an act of arson,” said OC Kamal Hossain.
Sheikh Sujat Mia is a former lawmaker representing Habiganj-1 constituency and a senior figure within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
