Dhaka, May 02 (V7N) – BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has said that demanding elections now feels like a punishable offense in Bangladesh. He warned that the growing encouragement of depoliticization poses a serious threat to the country’s democracy.

Speaking virtually at a discussion marking the founding anniversary of the Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party on Friday, Tarique criticized the interim government for what he described as unnecessary delays. "People are beginning to question why the government is wasting time. Announce an election roadmap now. The interim government must take the initiative to bring political parties face-to-face with the people," he urged.

Welcoming the 25 new political parties that have entered the political arena since August 5, the BNP leader acknowledged ideological differences but emphasized unity in the national interest. “There may be differences in ideology, but I hope everyone is united for the sake of the country,” he said.

He also expressed concern that "the fallen dictatorship is attempting to rise again," and questioned the interim government's inaction. “What steps has the interim government taken against the dictators who violated the Constitution?” he asked. He warned that if the current administration does not act, the next elected government will.

Tarique further argued that fascism cannot be eliminated through academic reforms alone. He reiterated the BNP’s demand for meaningful, qualitative reforms in both state structure and politics — led by elected representatives. “An accountable government will protect the country’s independence and sovereignty,” he said. “No one will then be able to make Bangladesh a subservient state.”

In a final message, he stated, “Let no one dare to turn Bangladesh into a subservient state in the future — that must be the political settlement we strive for.”
