Dhaka, Nov 01 (V7N)- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that there is no possibility of holding a referendum before the national elections, blaming the interim government for creating the current political crisis.

“I urge the government not to deceive the nation by spreading lies,” he said while addressing a discussion meeting organized by the Muktijoddha Dal at the National Press Club on Saturday.

Mirza Fakhrul alleged that a certain group is deliberately trying to erase the spirit of 1971, but emphasized that such efforts would fail. “We were born in 1971. The anti-Liberation forces, who once called the Liberation War a ‘hoax,’ are again conspiring,” he added.

He further stated that if elections had been held within three months of the people’s uprising, “the evil forces would never have dared to raise their heads.”

Outlining BNP’s position, Fakhrul said, “All necessary reforms are included in our 31-point plan. The next parliament will decide whether there will be proportional representation (PR) or not. People are being misled by false claims that elections will not be held without PR.”

Reaffirming BNP’s commitment to democracy, he said the party would resist all conspiracies to restore democratic governance.

Regarding Sheikh Hasina’s recent interviews with Indian media, Fakhrul said, “I urge the Indian government to send Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh. She must face trial.”
