Dhaka, Dec 24 (V7N)- BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s Chief Security Officer, Brigadier (Retd) Shamsul Islam, has said that Special Security Force (SSF) was not requested from the government for Tarique Rahman’s security.
He made the statement at a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Wednesday afternoon.
Shamsul Islam clarified that while the SSF has not been formally requested, the government is providing all necessary assistance to ensure Tarique Rahman’s safety.
“More security preparations have been taken than the actual level of risk,” he said.
The issue of Tarique Rahman’s security has been under discussion in the political arena for quite some time. Fresh speculation emerged recently following his social media post expressing regret over not being able to return to the country during his mother Khaleda Zia’s critical illness.
After the announcement of his return to Bangladesh following more than 17 years in exile, rumors circulated on social media and were echoed by some media outlets suggesting that a Special Security Force had been sought for his protection.
Dismissing those claims, Shamsul Islam said there was no truth to reports regarding an SSF request, adding that coordination with state agencies is ongoing to ensure a smooth and secure return.
Tarique Rahman is scheduled to return to the country on December 25, amid heightened political interest and extensive security measures at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and surrounding areas.
