Dhaka, Dec 25 (V7N)— BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman addressed a historic public reception at the 300-foot area (July 36 Expressway) in Purbachal on Thursday afternoon, marking his first speech on home soil in 17 years. Arriving at the stage at approximately 3:50 pm, Rahman was greeted by a "sea of people" that had gathered since dawn to witness his return from exile. The venue, chosen specifically to minimize public suffering in the city center, was packed to capacity with millions of supporters chanting slogans and waving the national flag.
In his brief but emotional address, Tarique Rahman expressed his deep gratitude to the people of Bangladesh for their resilience during the July-August uprising. "I have returned to a free Bangladesh, made possible by the blood of our martyrs and the courage of our youth," he stated. He emphasized a vision of "Bangladesh First," focusing on the restoration of democracy, rule of law, and economic stability. Rahman also called for national unity and urged supporters to remain disciplined as the country prepares for the 13th National Parliament Election on February 12, 2026. He was the sole speaker at the event, which was broadcast live via nearly 1,000 loudspeakers and 30 large LED screens across the capital.
Following the reception, Rahman’s motorcade proceeded toward Evercare Hospital, where he is scheduled to visit his ailing mother, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. Hospital authorities and party volunteers have implemented strict security measures for the visit. After meeting his mother, the top BNP leader will head to his residence, "Firoza," in Gulshan. His homecoming schedule continues on Friday with a visit to the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar and the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, followed by a visit to the grave of July Revolution martyr Sharif Osman Hadi on Saturday.
