Dhaka, Jan 26 (V7N) — BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned journalist and friend of Bangladesh, Sir Mark Tully.

Rahman conveyed his condolences in a post on his verified Facebook page at around 3:00 am on Sunday (January 25).

In the post, he wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the news of Sir Mark Tully’s passing. He was a respected journalist and a true friend of Bangladesh. Through his work for the BBC, he brought the story of our Liberation War and the struggle, hope and recovery of the people of this country to the whole world. His journalism was honest, humane and rooted in deep respect for truth.”

He further stated, “Bangladesh will always remember his solidarity and courageous journalism during the formation of Bangladesh as a nation and during times of crisis. We are eternally grateful to him for this contribution.”

Tarique Rahman also expressed deep condolences to Sir Mark Tully’s bereaved family, friends and long-time colleagues at the BBC, and prayed for the peace of the departed soul.

Sir Mark Tully passed away on Sunday afternoon while undergoing treatment at a hospital in India. He was 90 years old. He had been ill for some time and was receiving treatment at Max Hospital in Saket, New Delhi, for the past week.

Sir Mark Tully served as the BBC’s South Asia correspondent during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, playing a significant role in bringing global attention to Bangladesh’s struggle for independence.
