Apr 15 (V7N) — Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
He made the statement on Wednesday (April 15) while speaking at an economic conference organized by CNBC.
“Iran will definitely participate in the World Cup. We hope the situation will be calm by then, which will be good for everyone,” Infantino said.
The confirmation comes amid heightened uncertainty following recent military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. Iran had initially hinted at boycotting the tournament but later proposed relocating its matches from the US to Mexico.
Concerns were further amplified after Donald Trump raised security issues regarding Iranian players. However, Infantino dismissed such concerns, emphasizing that “sports should be above politics” and that Iran’s participation is essential as it represents its people.
Although a ceasefire came into effect earlier this month, tensions persist, particularly over US measures in the Strait of Hormuz and restrictions on Iranian ports. Despite this, FIFA has not altered the tournament schedule.
According to the current fixture, Iran will begin their World Cup campaign on June 15 in California against New Zealand. They are also scheduled to face Belgium on June 21 and Egypt on June 26 in the group stage.
