LOS ANGELES, United States, May 12 (V7N) – Donovan Mitchell erupted for 39 second-half points to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 112-103 comeback victory over the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Eastern Conference semi-finals on Monday, leveling the best-of-seven series at 2-2.
Mitchell finished with 43 points, five rebounds, and two assists, while James Harden added 24 points in front of a packed Rocket Arena in Cleveland. It was Mitchell’s third consecutive 30-point game, helping the Cavaliers claw back from an 0-2 series deficit.
His 39-point second-half performance tied the NBA record for most points in a single half of a postseason game, previously set by Golden State’s Eric Floyd in 1987.
“I was trying to set the tone on offense, and I didn’t do that in the first half. I came in at half-time and told my guys, ‘It’s on me,’” Mitchell said. “I tried to make a statement in the second half.”
Detroit had led 56-52 at halftime and looked poised to take a 3-1 series lead, but Mitchell dominated the third quarter, scoring 21 points as Cleveland opened a stunning 25-0 run to seize control at 75-58. He continued his scoring barrage in the fourth, while Pistons star Cade Cunningham was held to just seven points in the second half.
Cunningham finished with 19 points overall, and Caris LeVert led Detroit off the bench with 24 points.
The series now shifts back to Detroit for Game 5 on Wednesday. “They protected their home court and we did the same thing, so now we’ve got to go and get one,” Mitchell said. “We’ve got to bring the same energy and intensity.”
