Jan 31 (V7N) - Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has pledged to hold a "national dialogue conference" as part of the country’s transition following the fall of Bashar al-Assad. In his first address to the nation since taking office, Sharaa vowed to preserve civil peace, Syria’s territorial unity, and pursue justice for crimes committed during the war.
He also announced plans to issue a "constitutional declaration" to serve as a legal framework for the transition. His speech came after a visit by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, who urged the formation of an inclusive government and pledged support for Syria’s reconstruction.
Syria’s new authorities have dissolved all armed groups involved in Assad’s ouster and tasked Sharaa with forming a transitional legislature. A transitional government is set to govern until March 1, while discussions with Qatar and other nations focus on rebuilding Syria after nearly 14 years of war.
Sharaa’s appointment has been met with regional support, including congratulations from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Turkey. Saudi Arabia and Qatar have reopened embassies in Damascus, signaling a shift in diplomatic relations. Meanwhile, Russia, France, Germany, and Turkey have sent delegations to Syria, highlighting growing international engagement in the country’s future.
