Mar 31 (V7N) - The death toll from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar has exceeded 2,000, with more than 3,400 injured and over 200 people still missing.
As time passes, concerns grow that the number of fatalities among those trapped and missing will continue to rise.
However, on Monday (March 31), officials reported a miraculous rescue, as a woman was pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed hotel nearly 60 hours after the quake. This rare success has renewed hope, three days after the disaster.
A joint Chinese, Russian, and local rescue team conducted a five-hour operation to retrieve the woman from beneath the ruins of the Great Wall Hotel in Mandalay.
A Facebook post by the Chinese Embassy on Monday morning confirmed that the woman is in stable condition. Meanwhile, Myanmar and Thai search teams are racing against time to locate more survivors.
Additionally, Chinese rescue workers successfully pulled another survivor out, wrapped in a thermal blanket.
Drone footage of the devastated areas shows multi-story buildings completely flattened.
Myanmar's ongoing civil war has made it increasingly difficult to deliver aid to affected areas. Rebel groups have accused the military of continuing airstrikes, even after the disaster.
The country has faced major humanitarian challenges since the 2021 military coup, which has severely disrupted relief efforts.
The earthquake has caused widespread destruction to roads, bridges, airports, and other critical infrastructure, leaving over 3.5 million people displaced and crippling the healthcare system.
