Tehran, June 14 (V7N) — Iran has declared that nuclear negotiations with the United States are now meaningless following Israel’s recent military strikes on Iranian soil. The announcement casts serious doubt over the planned dialogue between Tehran and Washington scheduled for Sunday.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaie made the remarks during an interview with semi-official news agency Tasnim on Saturday, according to Reuters.
“Dialogue with Washington is meaningless when one side talks of negotiations and the other engages in aggression,” Baqaie said. He further alleged that Israel would not have dared to attack Iranian territory without US support, adding that Washington has now lost the standing to hold talks with Tehran.
For the past few months, representatives from both countries have been engaged in rounds of talks aimed at resolving long-standing disputes over Iran’s nuclear program. However, even after six rounds of negotiations, no concrete agreement has been reached.
The seventh round of talks, originally scheduled to be held in Muscat, Oman, is now uncertain in light of recent developments.
It is worth noting that Israeli Air Force (IAF) jets launched major airstrikes on at least eight Iranian cities, including the capital Tehran, around 4 AM on Friday (June 13). The Israeli attacks reportedly targeted Iran’s nuclear and military facilities, prompting immediate retaliation from Iran.
With tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv escalating, the prospect of renewed diplomatic engagement between Iran and the US has been thrown into serious doubt.
