Central America, 23 June 2024 – Severe storms and relentless heavy rains have claimed the lives of at least 30 people across Central America, forcing thousands to flee their homes and causing widespread flooding and landslides. Local officials in the affected areas provided updates on Friday, as reported by British news agency Reuters.

The death toll in El Salvador has risen to 19, including six children. Over 3,000 people have been relocated to temporary shelters. "We must first save people's lives," stated Luis Amaya, head of El Salvador's civil protection agency. "Material wealth comes and goes. But our main goal now is to save lives."

In Guatemala, authorities have reported 10 fatalities. Approximately 11,000 people have been safely evacuated from affected areas.

One death has been reported in Honduras. More than 1,200 people have been evacuated, and 180 communities have been cut off by the rain. Additionally, 22 houses have been destroyed.

Mexican authorities have forecasted heavy rain across most of the country, with particularly torrential downpours expected along parts of the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

The situation remains dire as Central American countries grapple with the aftermath of the severe weather. Emergency services are working tirelessly to evacuate residents and provide relief to those affected by the flooding and landslides.
