The severe cyclone Remal is heading towards the coastal regions of Bangladesh with significant force and is expected to make landfall from 6 PM today, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

BMD Meteorologist Shahinur Rahman indicated that the cyclone has intensified considerably and is likely to cause substantial rainfall in the country.

As of noon today, the cyclone was centered 335 km southwest of Chattogram port, 315 km southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 220 km south of Mongla port, and 200 km south of Payra port.

Due to the peripheral effects of the severe cyclone, coastal regions of Bangladesh are already experiencing gusty or squally winds with rain. The cyclone is projected to move northwards and is expected to cross the Sagar Island (West Bengal) and Khepupara coast near Mongla within 3-4 hours from 6 PM today.

The maximum sustained wind speed near the cyclone's center is approximately 90 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 120 km/h. The sea conditions near the cyclone's center are rough. Consequently, maritime ports of Payra and Mongla have been advised to hoist the great danger signal no. 10.

Coastal districts including Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Barguna, Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, and their offshore islands and chars are also under great danger signal no. 10. Similarly, Cox's Bazar and Chattogram maritime ports have been instructed to hoist great danger signal no. 9, along with the coastal districts of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Feni, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Chandpur, and their offshore islands and chars.

Riverports in the districts of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Barguna, Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Chattogram, and Cox's Bazar have been advised to lower riverine danger signal no. 3 and instead hoist riverine great danger signal no. 4.

The low-lying areas in the coastal districts are expected to be inundated by wind-driven surges reaching 8-12 feet above normal astronomical tide.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty or squally winds, is anticipated across the Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. The hilly regions of Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Chattogram are at risk of landslides due to the intense rainfall.

All fishing boats and trawlers in the north bay and deep sea have been instructed to seek shelter until further notice.
