Dhaka, Feb 25 (V7N)- Amid concerns over law and order, Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman has stated that the armed forces aim to return to the cantonment, leaving the country in a stable condition. He made these remarks on Tuesday while addressing the first-ever 'National Martyrs' Day' event at the Rawa Club in the capital.

Highlighting the ongoing unrest, General Waqar-uz-Zaman noted, “One is busy agitating against another, which is causing the current deterioration in the law and order situation.”

He further pointed out that many police officers are not actively working due to ongoing legal cases, arrests, and fear, which has weakened law enforcement operations.

The Army Chief mentioned, “I have already said that the government may be heading in that direction to hold (elections) within 18 months.” He also cautioned that if political infighting continues, “independence will be in danger.”

Addressing the 2009 BDR mutiny, General Waqar-uz-Zaman made it clear that those involved in the crimes will not be granted amnesty. He reassured that the trial process will not be compromised, and an independent commission is investigating the real culprits.

The event, marking the first official 'National Martyrs' Day', was presided over by Rawa Club President Col. (Retd) Abdul Haque. Senior army officers and families of the martyrs were also present.

On February 25-26, 2009, a violent mutiny at the then BDR headquarters claimed 74 lives, including 57 army officers. This year, for the first time, the tragedy is being officially observed as 'National Martyrs' Day'.
