Barguna, Dec 28 (V7N) – Maruf Chowdhury, President of the Patharghata Upazila unit of the BNP-affiliated Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal, was killed in a road accident in Patharghata, Barguna district, on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 3:00 pm on the Patharghata–Barishal regional highway near the Patharghata Community Centre area. Local residents rescued Maruf Chowdhury in critical condition and took him to the Patharghata Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Barishal for advanced treatment. He died on the way to Barishal at around 7:00 pm after reaching the Bhandaria area of neighbouring Pirojpur district.

The death was confirmed by his uncle, Chowdhury Mohammad Faruk, the recently former convener of the Patharghata Upazila BNP. Maruf Chowdhury was also the second son of Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, President of the Patharghata Press Club and local correspondent of the daily Jugantor.

According to family sources, Maruf Chowdhury left home alone on his motorcycle after having lunch earlier in the day and met with the accident shortly afterwards. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

Officer-in-Charge of Patharghata Police Station, Monchenla, said that Maruf Chowdhury died in a road accident, adding that details surrounding how the accident occurred are still under investigation.

Following his death, BNP Vice Chairman Nurul Islam Moni expressed deep sorrow. A wave of mourning has spread across Patharghata, with political leaders, journalists and members of civil society offering prayers for the departed soul and expressing condolences to the bereaved family.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted road safety concerns in the region.
