Sundarbans, Jan 05 (V7N) — The Bangladesh Coast Guard rescued 44 domestic and foreign tourists from a damaged tourist boat in the Karamjal area of the Sundarbans on Sunday.

Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq, media officer of the Coast Guard in Dhaka, said the vessel, named Pirates Sundarbans, had departed from Khulna on Thursday carrying a total of 44 passengers towards the Sundarbans. On Saturday night around 10:30pm, the boat collided with a bulkhead in the Pashur River near Karamjal, causing a hole in the hull and rapid water ingress. A tourist on board immediately alerted the Coast Guard.

Two Coast Guard rescue teams quickly mobilized in speedboats and reached the scene. In the first phase of the operation, 24 tourists—including two Chinese nationals, women, and children—were rescued safely. In the second phase, another 20 tourists were evacuated. All rescued passengers were reported safe in Mongla.

Lt. Commander Siam-ul-Haq emphasized that the Coast Guard remains vigilant in ensuring waterway safety for tourists and will continue its efforts to prevent maritime accidents in the future.
