Dhaka, Oct 16 (V7N)- Bangladesh is currently self-sufficient in food production but is facing potential food crises due to natural calamities, according to Retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the Agriculture Adviser to the government. He made this statement during a seminar organized by the Council of Agricultural Research on the occasion of World Food Day on Wednesday (October 16).

The adviser pointed out that, while the country has made significant strides in agricultural output, the frequent occurrence of natural disasters is posing serious challenges to food security. He further highlighted that food wastage is becoming a growing concern, which contributes to the looming crisis. "A major cause of food shortages is food wastage. We must be aware and take steps to prevent it," he said, urging citizens to be more mindful in their consumption and disposal of food.

In addition to addressing food wastage, Lt. Gen. Chowdhury called on large commercial companies to invest in the agricultural sector in a more scientific and sustainable manner. He emphasized that such investments are crucial to overcoming the current challenges posed by both climate-related disasters and food wastage.

The seminar was attended by key figures in the agricultural sector, including the Secretary of Food, the Secretary of Agriculture, and the Head of the Bangladesh Office of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), who also spoke on the need for collaboration and innovation to secure the country's food future in the face of these growing challenges.
