Dhaka, Mar 04 (V7N) – The Ministry of Education has revoked its decision to introduce a quota system for the children of families affected by the July-August 2024 uprising in government school admissions. The move comes after widespread controversy over the initial directive.

However, the government has decided to allocate one additional seat per class in government schools for the family members of those injured or martyred in the uprising.

On Monday (March 3), a revised order was issued, signed by Deputy Secretary (Secondary-1) Mosammat Rahima Akhtar, officially canceling the previous directive from February 20, 2025.

According to the new order:

  • One seat in each class will be reserved for the family members of those injured or martyred in the July 2024 uprising.
  • This is in addition to the seats determined through the lottery system.
  • Applicants must submit an attested copy of a relevant certificate/gazette and present the original document during admission.
  • The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs will verify the gazette records before finalizing admissions.
  • If no eligible applicants are found, the reserved seat will be allocated to candidates from the merit list—it cannot remain vacant.

Previously, the February 20 directive stated that 5% of seats in government schools would be reserved for the children of freedom fighters and the families of those injured or martyred in the July-August 2024 uprising. However, after facing criticism, the government decided to scrap this quota system while still ensuring a special allocation.

The decision aims to balance public concerns while acknowledging the sacrifices of those affected by last year’s political unrest.
