South Sudan, Sep 18 (V7N)- A total of 200 members of the Bangladesh Navy's Force Marine Unit (BANFMU-9), stationed in Juba as part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, have been awarded UN Peacekeeping Medals. The medal parade was held on Tuesday at the BANFMU-9 camp, with Lieutenant General Mohan Subramaniam, force commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), as the chief guest.

Lieutenant General Subramaniam commended the Bangladesh Navy personnel for their exceptional bravery and skill in operating in the challenging conditions of the Nile River and conflict zones. He emphasized their critical role in transporting essential supplies like fuel and food for the UN, as well as their successful completion of 50 logistics operations over 1,300 kilometers along the Nile.

The Bangladesh Navy unit has been key in carrying out patrols, reconnaissance, rescue, and diving operations, while also securing river transport for various UN agencies in the region. The force commander expressed his gratitude to both the Bangladesh Navy and the Government of Bangladesh for their continued support in global peacekeeping.

Since 2015, the Bangladesh Navy has been the sole marine force in UNMISS, playing a significant role in fostering peace and development in South Sudan. Their efforts have been widely praised for contributing to regional stability.

Additionally, the Bangladesh Navy's warship, BNS Sangram, is actively representing the nation in international waters, notably in the Mediterranean Sea, as part of global peace initiatives.
