Dhaka, Oct 14 (V7N): The government is set to launch the sale of potatoes, eggs, onions, and vegetables through the Open Market Sale (OMS) program in Dhaka starting Tuesday, aiming to ease the financial burden on fixed-income households, according to Agriculture Ministry Secretary Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian.

For the first time, perishable items will be sold at multiple locations across the city as part of a pilot initiative, with some vegetables offered at subsidized rates.

The launch event is scheduled for tomorrow at 11am in front of the Directorate General of Food Office on Abdul Ghani Road, with several key figures expected to attend, including Agriculture Ministry Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Commerce Ministry Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Commerce Secretary Md. Selim Uddin, and Agriculture Secretary Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian.

Prices are set at Tk30 per kilogram for potatoes, Tk130 per dozen for eggs, and Tk70 per kilogram for onions, while green vegetables will be available at 20-30% below market rates.

These items will be sourced directly from farmers and sold through OMS at 20 locations in Dhaka over the next two weeks. If successful, the program could be expanded both in terms of duration and number of sales points.

The initiative is being supported by the Department of Agricultural Marketing, the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), and the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC).

This decision came after a special meeting between Chief Adviser of the interim government, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, and other advisers.
