Dhaka, Oct 31 (V7N)- The National Legal Aid Services (NLAS) has extended legal assistance to approximately 1,21,630 prisoners at government expense since 2009, according to an official report. This support, provided through NLAS, spans from 2009 to September 2024, as detailed on the organization’s website.
The Chief Justice recently directed that legal aid be provided to accused individuals lacking representation in criminal cases. During the period, NLAS has offered 4,42,096 legal consultations to those in financial need, helping them secure around Tk 217,59,61,858 in compensation.
To date, the government has supported 11,10,036 financially disadvantaged litigants across 4,03,201 cases, with 2,03,032 cases resolved. Of these litigants, 28,016 received aid through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, 28,853 from labor legal aid centers in Dhaka and Chattogram, 1,78,0506 through the NLAS toll-free hotline (16430), and 17,328 via the hotline prior to its establishment.
Additionally, the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) system has successfully settled 1,29,038 cases out of 1,42,612, benefitting 2,43,512 individuals.
