"Rohingya refugees in Ukhiya commemorate International Mother Language Day, honoring their linguistic heritage and expressing a desire to return to Arakan."
Cox's Bazar, Feb 22, (V7N) – International Mother Language Day 2025 was celebrated at the Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar.
A gathering was held in the C block of Camp 9 in the Palangkhali Union of the Upazila on Friday morning, February 21.
The event began with a tribute to the martyrs who lost their lives during the language movement in 1952. During the gathering, speeches were given by imams, teachers, youth rights activists, and Rohingya leaders.
Maulana Mohammad Saleh, in his speech, emphasized the importance of preserving their language and culture: "We have our own language and culture. We speak the Rohingya language. We must protect our linguistic heritage for the future generations."
Rohingya leader Dil Mohammad expressed gratitude towards Bangladesh for providing humanitarian shelter: "We are grateful to Bangladesh. We must maintain peace and unity in the camp. We wish to return to our homeland, Arakan."
The gathering, organized by the Rohingya National Education Board, which works to preserve the Rohingya language, saw the participation of thousands of Rohingya refugees from various camps.
