Rangamati, Mar 09 (V7N) - The District Law and Order Committee has expressed deep concern over the alarming spread of drugs in Rangamati, a popular tourist city. In the district’s highest-level security meeting, committee members pointed out specific drug hotspots and urged the administration to take immediate and strict action. Local representatives demanded a crackdown on the uncontrolled circulation of drugs, especially in bordering upazilas near India, calling for a special anti-drug operation along the smuggling routes.
Concerns were also raised about the long delay in installing CCTV cameras in Rangamati city, a project that remains unfinished. Additionally, the absence of the responsible officer from the Rangamati Narcotics Control Department drew unanimous dissatisfaction from the committee members.
The meeting also saw strong criticism of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Rangamati. Members alleged that the ACC has failed to take action against massive corruption that took place during the previous fascist government. They accused the agency of deliberate inaction in prosecuting those involved in corrupt activities and noted the absence of an ACC representative at the meeting.
The law and order meeting was presided over by Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Md. Habib Ullah Maruf and attended by high-ranking officials, including the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Chief Executive Officer of Rangamati Hill District Council, Additional Superintendent of Police, Civil Surgeon, Press Club representatives, BGB officers, LGED, Roads Department officials, media personnel, and civil society representatives.
During the meeting, key decisions were made to: Intensify anti-smuggling and anti-drug operations in Rangamati’s border upazilas.
Launch special raids against illegal traders hoarding oil and milk in local markets. Ensure regular sales of essential commodities through TCB and OMS programs, benefiting the people of Rangamati.
The meeting concluded with a minute of silence in honor of AKM Maksud Ahmed, the late editor of Giridarpan newspaper, who was a renowned journalist in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
