Comilla, Apr 15, (V7N) - The Comilla Customs, Excise, and VAT Commissionerate carried out a mass destruction of seized illegal Indian goods worth approximately 4 crore taka on Wednesday morning. The operation took place at the Gomti River embankment in the city's Kaptanbazar area after all necessary legal formalities and departmental clearances were finalized.
The destroyed cache consisted of a wide variety of contraband items seized during various operations by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The inventory included large quantities of banned fireworks, illegal medicines, Indian saris, three-piece suits, and various expired food items that had been smuggled across the border at different times.
Nitish Biswas, Joint Commissioner of the Comilla Customs, Excise, and VAT Commissionerate Office, explained that this destruction is a routine part of the legal framework governing Customs operations. He noted that law enforcement agencies frequently seize banned and illegal goods that are deemed ineligible for public auction due to safety or health risks, necessitating their permanent disposal.
According to officials, a total of 472 General Register (GR) items were processed for destruction during the morning session. The Joint Commissioner further specified that 90 percent of the items destroyed consisted of fireworks and other hazardous materials, with the remaining portion comprising illegal garments and pharmaceutical products.
