Meherpur, Jul 18 (V7N)-  Gangni Municipality in Meherpur is producing environmentally friendly vermicompost organic fertilizer from the town's daily garbage and organic waste, creating a sustainable solution that is improving waste management while supporting local agriculture.

According to officials, around three tonnes of waste are collected every day from different parts of the municipality and transported to the Chaugacha Solid and Sewage Waste Management Plant. There, plastic and other non-biodegradable materials are separated, while biodegradable waste is processed into vermicompost.

The initiative is helping maintain a cleaner urban environment and providing farmers with safe, chemical-free organic fertilizer for crop production.

Local farmers have shown growing interest in using the organic fertilizer because it is cheaper than many chemical alternatives. They say it helps reduce production costs while improving soil fertility and promoting healthier crop cultivation.

Gangni Upazila Agriculture Officer Matiar Rahman said the integrated waste management system currently produces about 400 kilograms of vermicompost each month, which is being sold at Tk 20 per kilogram.

Senior Assistant Engineer of Gangni Municipality, Raju Ahmed, said the municipality plans to increase production in the future. He added that authorities are closely monitoring the processing system to ensure organic waste is properly converted into high-quality fertilizer.

"Our goal is not only to keep the municipality clean but also to provide farmers with an environmentally friendly fertilizer that benefits agriculture," he said.

The solid and sewage waste management plant was established under the 30 Municipality Water Supply and Sanitation Project, and officials believe the initiative could serve as a model for sustainable waste management in other municipalities across the country.
