St. Martin Island, Sept. 18 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Coast Guard distributed dry food and relief supplies to 150 low-income and impoverished families on Saint Martin’s Island, Bangladesh’s only coral island, amid difficulties caused by the suspension of tourism.
The relief distribution took place from 10am to 1pm Thursday under the management of the Coast Guard’s East Zone. The supplies were distributed from the Coast Guard vessel Tajuddin.
Coast Guard media officer Lt. Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the development Thursday afternoon.
He said the Bangladesh Coast Guard regularly provides humanitarian assistance to low-income communities in coastal and riverine areas, particularly during periods of crisis, while also working to ensure public safety.
“Many low-income families on Saint Martin’s Island are facing hardship because tourism has been suspended,” Lt. Commander Sujon said. “To help ease their difficulties, the Coast Guard distributed dry food and other relief supplies among 150 families.”
He said the Coast Guard would continue its humanitarian assistance programmes for vulnerable, impoverished and disaster-affected people in remote and coastal areas of the country.
