IU, Jan 16, (V7N) - Students of Islamic University (IU) detained five buses on Wednesday afternoon following the alleged assault of a student by bus drivers and helpers of Gorai Poribahan.
The victim, Asif Mahmud, a student from the Department of Statistics, 2019-20 academic session, was reportedly attacked after an argument with the bus staff. According to Asif, he boarded a Gorai Poribahan bus with his wife around 11:00 a.m. in Jhenaidah, heading to Jessore. When the driver was speeding, Asif protested and requested the driver to slow down. This led to a heated exchange between him, the driver, and the bus helpers, which escalated into physical violence against the student.
Students, voicing their concerns, claimed that bus drivers and helpers on the Kushtia-Khulna route frequently misbehave with students. They alleged that helpers refuse to charge the correct fare, even for short distances, and often show disrespect. The students have demanded that the university authorities address these issues with a permanent solution.
In response, the university’s proctor, Dr. Shahinuzzaman, said, "We are already in discussions with the bus owners' labor union about this issue. We hope to reach a resolution soon."
