Dhaka, Dec 10 (V7N)- The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has proposed the abolition of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) as part of its comprehensive police reform plan. The recommendations, aimed at making law enforcement more people-friendly and neutral, were presented by Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, head of the party's police reform committee, after a two-month-long consultation with stakeholders.
At a press briefing held at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office, Ahmed highlighted several key proposals, including:
- Abolishing RAB: Describing it as "internationally controversial" and a "monster," he acknowledged BNP’s role in its establishment but argued for its dissolution due to its tarnished reputation.
- Recruitment Reforms: Streamlining police recruitment to two examination stages instead of the current four.
- Community Policing: Establishing union-based community policing led by retired police officers.
- Improved Training and Welfare: Regular training for police members and ensuring one full day off each week to enhance morale and efficiency.
Ahmed also criticized the sheltering of 488 corrupt police members within army cantonments, urging greater accountability and transparency in law enforcement.
Long-term Vision
Ahmed emphasized that even if the interim government disregards these recommendations, the BNP intends to implement them if it comes to power. "We will develop the police into a neutral and professional force that is acceptable to the people," he stated.
The proposals are part of BNP's broader efforts to reform Bangladesh's governance structure, signaling significant changes in law enforcement and accountability measures.
