Gazipur, Dec 24 (V7N) — BNP Vice Chairman Abdus Salam Pintu was released from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur on Tuesday morning after serving 17 years in connection with the August 21, 2004, grenade attack case. His release followed a recent acquittal by the High Court.

Senior Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur Prison Part-2, Al Mamun, confirmed that Pintu's release papers were received on Monday night and verified Tuesday morning. As no other arrest warrants were pending against him, he was released shortly after 11 am.

Upon his release, a large gathering of relatives and BNP activists greeted him at the jail gate with flowers and celebratory processions, filling the area with chants and congratulations.

Abdus Salam Pintu was arrested in 2008 in connection with the grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Dhaka on August 21, 2004, which claimed 24 lives and injured many others. In 2018, Pintu, along with 18 others, was sentenced to death, while another 19 were given life imprisonment.

Pintu, the founding general secretary of the Tangail District BNP, served as a member of parliament from the Tangail-2 (Gopalpur-Bhuiyanpur) constituency in the 1991, 1996, and 2001 elections. He also held the position of deputy minister in 2001.

His release marks a significant development in the case that has long been a point of political contention in Bangladesh.
