Dhaka, Dec 29 (V7N)— BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has strongly criticised Jamaat-e-Islami, accusing the party of hypocrisy and attempting to exploit the current political climate for its benefit. Rizvi made these remarks while speaking to reporters on Sunday after paying tribute to late President Ziaur Rahman on behalf of the Nationalist Rickshaw Van Auto Workers' Party.

He accused Jamaat of acting against Bangladesh's independence during the 1971 Liberation War and continuing to exploit religion for political gain. "In 1971, Jamaat-e-Islami opposed the country. They have repeatedly committed hypocrisy with the nation in the name of Islam," Rizvi said.

Rizvi also highlighted the BNP's unwavering commitment to democracy over the decades, contrasting it with what he described as Jamaat's opportunistic politics. "From 1971 to 2024, BNP has never compromised on democracy," he asserted.

The BNP leader further criticised Jamaat for attempting to align with groups they had previously opposed. He accused them of trying to "fish in murky waters" and questioned their stance on reconciling with political adversaries, particularly the Awami League.

He also alluded to alleged financial irregularities by Jamaat, accusing them of embezzlement and occupying public spaces for financial gain. "The people know who the party is that is cutting the ropes. They have occupied the CNG bus stand in the neighborhood," Rizvi said.

Concluding his remarks, Rizvi emphasised that the people of Bangladesh are aware of Jamaat's past and present actions, stating, "People know your role in 1971. You took a stand against Bangladesh. The people of this country know everything—who believes in independence, who believes in sovereignty."

Rizvi's comments come amidst heightened political tensions in the country, with various parties jockeying for influence ahead of the next general election.
