Dhaka, Feb 10 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus assured them of a national election by December, with a possible roadmap announcement by February 15.
Speaking to journalists after a 90-minute meeting at state guesthouse Jamuna on Monday evening, Fakhrul emphasized the urgency of finalizing election plans, expressing hopes that the government would act swiftly.
“The Chief Adviser and his team are actively working to arrange elections by December,” Fakhrul said. “We expect a clear roadmap soon, and possibly an announcement within the next few days.”
When asked about the official timeline, he stated, "The government will decide, but February 15 is a likely date for updates."
BNP’s Demands: Fair Elections & Administrative Reforms
BNP reiterated its call for:
- A timely, transparent national election
- Immediate reforms to remove fascist elements from administration
- Accountability for economic mismanagement and corruption
“We have urged the government to ensure a level playing field and to address political harassment, including false cases against our leaders,” Fakhrul added.
BNP raised concerns about the rising cost of living, calling it one of the government's biggest failures. Fakhrul also addressed the ongoing Operation Devil Hunt, stressing that innocent people must not be wrongfully targeted.
BNP’s Meeting with the Chief Adviser
The three-member BNP delegation included:
- Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Secretary General
- Salahuddin Ahmed, BNP Standing Committee Member
- Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, BNP Standing Committee Member
The meeting, which started at 6:20 PM and lasted until 7:35 PM, follows a separate BNP delegation’s discussion with the Election Commission on Sunday, led by Nazrul Islam Khan.
With the general election scheduled for December 2025, all eyes are now on the government’s roadmap announcement, expected within the next few days. BNP insists that no other elections should take place before the national polls.
