Dhaka, Feb 20 (V7N) – BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has urged for united efforts to strengthen and sustain justice, human equality, and true democracy. He made this call in a message issued on Thursday (February 20) on the occasion of Great Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day.
In his statement, Tarique Rahman emphasized the historic significance of February 21, describing it as an unforgettable chapter in the national history of Bangladesh.
"On this day, I pay deep respect to all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives to uphold the dignity of our mother tongue. The bloodshed of February 21, 1952, by the students of Dhaka University, including Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, and Jabbar, marked the first step of our national liberation movement. Their great sacrifice paved the way for our independence. Today, February 21 is observed worldwide as International Mother Language Day in recognition of the movement’s impact," he said.
Tarique Rahman warned that despite the country’s independence, hegemonic forces continue to conspire against Bangladesh’s language and culture to impose their influence.
"Certain forces seek to weaken our national identity and culture, preventing us from standing tall in the global community. However, the people of this country have always resisted oppression with indomitable courage. To ensure that democracy remains free from chains, those who believe in freedom, sovereignty, and democratic values must remain vigilant at all times," he added.
Highlighting the global recognition of February 21, the BNP leader noted that the movement had strengthened national unity and self-consciousness.
"The search for the roots of our history and the awakening of our language consciousness have reinforced our sense of nationalism and unity. International Mother Language Day is now recognized worldwide as a movement to protect linguistic heritage. On this occasion, I extend my best wishes to all the socio-cultural and political organizations holding various programs to mark the day," he stated.
Concluding his message, Tarique Rahman prayed for the eternal peace of the language martyrs and expressed solidarity with their bereaved families.
"I pay tribute to the language movement veterans and wish their families happiness, peace, and long life. Their sacrifices will forever inspire us to uphold justice, equality, and democracy," he said.
